Open LE with standard

Post by Otuama » Sat Jul 13, 2013 9:45 am

Anyone who has invested in a standard license, or has been using Rf for years are likely in a position to help new users. However, new users are more likely to have the demo or LE edition of Rf.

Demo & LE scenes can't be opened in standard versions so it's impossible to help a user by looking at their scenes.

Would it be possible to change this by allowing Standard to open Demo & LE?

If the standard user changes and saves the scene it'd be unopenable (is that even a word?) by the Demo or LE so it'd be a purely advisory situation........ 'I've loaded your scene, I did this, and this to fix it'.

What would be better is if the standard user could save the scene and it'd be saved as a demo or LE version. That way the user could open the modified scene in their version.

I'm trying to think of any possibilities of things going wrong with this but it's too early in the morning and my brain hasn't woken up yet.

I can do it too.

I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

SideFX did this for Houdini, license can open apprentice and apprentice can open license as a matter of fact. If the licensed version of the scene was saved in non commercial, it turns it into a non commercial scene and vice verca if I remember correctly.

As there isn't a huge difference between standard and learning, maybe not allowing learning to open standard scenes is just an added limitation, and a good one for NL.
license can open apprentice and apprentice can open license
I don't know anything about Houdini but if that's the case I presume apprentice/LE is watermarked or limited in some way because otherwise there'd be no way to differentiate between the two.

If NL allowed that to happen it may mean them having to do a complete software workaround..... I think.

Again, I presume apprentice is watermarked then because you may as well just get apprentice and work with that.

-----------------

To be quite honest, I'm not sure what safeguards NL has in place for LE users. Because, to be blunt, what's stopping an LE user doing commercial work? There aren't many significant differences between the two license types.

So, maybe it'd actually be a good thing for the following to happen.

Standard users can open any licence type (demo or LE)
Demo or LE can only open their own licence type
Licence and demo users have their software watermarked. This would only actually affect screen recordings of the Rf GUI, openGL & Maxwell previews. And also maybe Fire.
