Errors & Crashing

Post by thebigmontagestudios » Wed Aug 20, 2014 1:32 am

Hi guys. Posted two messages over the past couple of days and didn't get a response. Then i just realized it was because i posted them in the beta forum. OOPS! lol. Anyway, here they are below
Hi guys. I'm struggling here. Trying to get a scene done and i keep running in to problems. It's a pretty simple hybrido domain, fairly large with a rocket splashing through. All RF created geometry so nothing intense. I sent an error message that i was receiving in an earlier post but didn't hear anything back yet. However, i'm also running in to issues where it is completely bogging down, locking up, and in a couple of instances, crashing my machine. It's a brand new Mac Pro 12 core with 64GB ram and dual gpu's. I don't think it should be running as slow as it is but it's almost unusable. The sim is about 42 million particles at it's peak, all hybrido. Is that too much? I thought between the RF developments and my system that it would be able to handle that. Am i wrong? I know it's a large scene but is it too large? My storage devices are all thunderbolt connected and even did it on an SSD and still the same result. Can you please help me?

When doing a large sim like that, should i have the openCL option turned on? about 72 frames in on one try and 86 on the other of a 144 frame sequence it gave me a memory allocation failure.

Also, (sorry about all the questions, just trying to get this all done and done right), but when meshing, what is a realistic ballpark of a number that should be my maximum? When i went to mesh this scene, it had over 200 million faces. (i was using most of the default hybrido mesh settings and that was WITHOUT use displacement turned on) I'm thinking if i try to bring that into maya, it's going to kill it. Will using the RFRK make any difference there? Will maya be able to handle such a large scene?

I've done a lot of studying and training in RF over the years but this is a problem that has kind of stood in my way for a while as far as really 'finishing' a lot of the scenes i have done. So any help you can offer is really greatly appreciated. I'm totally stuck right now

Hi guys. Need some help here. I keep trying to run a sim and I keep getting errors on it. The errors have varied where they occur but i have been fiddling with this for days. It's saying a memory allocation failure. I am running the sims on a Mac Pro 12 core machine with 64GB ram and sending the files to a thunderbolt connected 6TB Lacie drive. Both machine and drive have plenty of available space. Is this normal? Am i doing something wrong? Please help!!!

Hi Mark,

Replied on the other post. Summer is always "slow" around here, especially August, so sorry about the small delay.
Likely to be openCL related, in this case probably won´t help and the memory will be a bottleneck.

Regarding particle count, it should be ok.
The 200 million poly mesh, might be a bit brutal. Could you try increasing the polygon size and/or reducing the particle radius? You should get something easier to handle while still being able to achieve decent results.

Cheers,

g-)
