Stretching & Displacements

Post by thebigmontagestudios » Thu Jun 11, 2015 2:37 pm

Hi all. First off, should the .exr displacement maps generated from Realflow be used as vector displacements or as floating displacements? I'm trying to render inside RMS and it's all pretty confusing as none of their shaders for it are very straightforward.

Second, I have attached an image that shows 'stretching' inside of my Hybrido waves. What would be the best way to eliminate this? This was a roughly 20million particle sim and it looked good inside the RF Viewport, but when it is coming to the meshing process, i'm struggling to get the areas of the wave bottom to NOT look like they're stretching the mesh. Is it something to do with the displacement dimension of the domain? Should it be higher or lower? It's already generating a 4k map so i don't think that's the problem. Any advice here would be tremendously appreciated. I'm super frustrated and in a time crunch :-( =bad combination

Hello,

You can use the generic Maya displacement shader in both ways, vector and scalar displacement. If you use scalar displacement only the green channel from the texture should be read . Make sure that "vector encoding" is "signed.." and "Vector Space" is "World"

Maybe this videotutorial can help you

About the second question. Could you try to turn off "core smoothing" and "splash thinning" filters, please?

Thanks Hector. I hadn't seen that video before. It was very helpful. I do have some confusion though on where you doing the multiply & divide nodes for the multiple displacements and where you were doing some of the scaling on the extensions and placement node. If you have time and could go into a bit of detail more on how to hook those up and what to connect to what, and maybe even why, I think it would help myself and i'm sure many others gain a greater understanding
