Hi Dave,

Tricky to track with endless combinations of hardware/driver but will do our best.
We do have a few GeForce GTX around so as soon as we have a driver that shows a correct behavior will let you all know.

I don't own a Quadro card, so the drivers i have are different, the ones i tried so far don't work well-
Nvidia GTX 580

V314.22 slow
V320.18 slow

EDIT:
V314.07 slow
V310.90 slow

EDIT II:
V306.97 slow
V296.10 slow

that's as far back as i have.

its interesting that the latest driver with my GTX 8800 is working fine.

Dave.
Hi again Dave,

Could you pass me your scene again?
Just checked with v314.07 and that one gives me good results on my tests.
Gonna try v314.22 in a tic.
EDIT : v314.22 also ok on my tests.

Hi Dave,

I think this scene's issue(slowness) isn´t related to the driver that much, but the substeps you are using.
You should not need to crank them up that much. For starters, I'd leave the minimum set to 1 since you don´t want to be enforcing 50 steps per frame when there is no need for it.
With substeps by default your scene should play almost realtime.
Give it a go and let us know.

Hi Gus,

I didn't think substeps where an issue for Rw surfaces :o
that said though, regardless of the substeps my laptop shouldn't out perform my main machine (same substeps across all 3 machines)

I am at work at the moment so I tried min 1 max 10 on my laptop and got ~28 seconds same as before.
I will try on my main machine (also give 314.07 another try) tonight and let you know.

cheers.

Dave.

Hi Dave,

can you disable the file export for your RealWave?

I just tested it on my Mac (without writing files to disk) and it takes 13 seconds on GUI and 8 on command line.

With one substep per frame, of course.

Hi Alex,

I have tried low substeps and export off on 3 machines-

PC1 Nvidia 320.18 8core/16gb
1min 1max OGL 9 sec CMD 6 sec
2min 2max OGL 19sec CMD 13 sec
3min 3max OGL 31sec CMD 20 sec

PC2 Nvidia 320.18 6core/8gb
1min 1max OGL 11sec CMD 9 sec
2min 2max OGL 22sec CMD 17 sec
3min 3max OGL 36sec CMD 25 sec

lTop ATI 8.783 4core/6gb
1min 1max OGL 23 sec CMD 20 sec
2min 2max OGL 40 sec CMD 38 sec
3min 3max OGL 57 sec CMD 55 sec

that is better, but as soon as i have any particles in the scene i will need to raise the substeps (i assume)

cheers

Dave.

Thanks for the tests Dave,

It looks like the bottleneck in the desktop machines is the write to disk process.

Are you storing the output files always in a local hard drive?
Or are you saving files through the network?

Maybe you can try to copy and paste big files in your computers to see the performance of your operating system when doing such a thing.

There are also third party tools to test the input/output performance of a hard disk.
Like AS SSD Benchmark 1.6

Hi Alex,

I sim to a local HD
i will look into disk performance, though the .bin files for this test are only ~620kb each.

cheers.

Hi,

I have now installed the latest beta drivers from Nvidia 320.49 and sim times are way better now :D

cheers

Dave.

EDIT.
Sadly only for RW surfaces, particle performance is poor.
