Constant crashes with FIRE

Post by Otuama » Wed Jun 12, 2013 10:02 am

I kept trying to do a fire render but Rf kept crashing.

I tried it with a blank scene and it still crashed. No idea why because it was working 10 mins ago.

-------------------------

It's also happening with Maxwell preview. Time for a system restart, me thinks.

-------------------------

Nope, Maxwell still isn't working even after a restart. Oh joy !!

-------------------------

Reinstalled Rf. Same problem.

Is there a maxwell pref file I can delete?

-------------------------

Fire would only work if I set Rf to Vista compatibility. It worked in a blank scene. I then loaded my scene and it crashed. I loaded the scene again and went to a frame which didn't show a mesh. It rendered the objects.

I then went back to the frame with the mesh and it crashed.

I reloaded Rf and rebuilt the mesh and only then did fire work.

There's no Maxwell preferences file, only the preferences shown in the interface.
I found this problem while I was trying to use weird materials (with a lot of displacement, etc), but never while rendering a void scene.
Things I would try to look for the bug:

- Create a new scene with no geometry and try to render (FIRE and maxwell preview)
- do the same thing with a different resolution, different sampling level, different image quality, different number of threads, different engine, different window resolution, different motion blur factor...
Try that with no geometry and a simple cube.

Have you changed any other thing in your system? It's weird it suddenly stopped working.

Hi. Not sure if you posted before I made my last edit.

It hasn't crashed since but if it does I'll do those checks.

Nope, nothing was changed. Just stopped working.

However, I just made a new scene and it took a bit longer than usual.

I didn't know Rf had an alien language option:

Sorry, I don't talk alien :o

Restarted Rf and it's back to normal.

No, I replied just before your last edit.

All those failures are kinda related. It looks like something is wrong with OpenGL or your graphic compatibility. I'm glad it works now.

Hmm, it still crashes when reloading the scene and running fire without rebuilding the mesh.

I'm having issues with my gfx card and 2013, Angel knows about this. I'm running an old driver because I had problems. I'll see if a newer, but not newest driver helps.

...not to your core question, but in this context ... I´ve also deep trouble with Fire in RF ( crashes all the time, Mac, Quadro 4000). I got the info that its more stable when a material is activ applied ( froim the menu), didn´t test it yet ...

Hi Pinochio,
Does the Maxwell Preview option works fine in your mac? I mean, you are having problems only with FIRE, right?

Pinochio is in real named Tom ;) ...

I´mean the preview rendering of the RF scene by starting FIRE in RF .. so for my understanding its the same maxwell preview and FIRE. Or i´m wrong ?!

FIRE in Maxwell renderer in Studio or in C4D works without any problems on the same machine.

Best ,
Tom ;)

EDIT: For testing i installed the GFX 680 4GB. Orginal OSx (10.8.4) driver were used , same result.

I've now updated my gfx card to the last but one version and it's still crashing. It only doesn't crash if I rebuild the meshes.

I'm building a sequence of meshes now so Maxwell preview may work but I think it's going to crash again when I reload Rf. If it does it will mean I need to rebuild ALL the meshes again.

No idea why this is happening but I don't like it  .

Sorry Tom :D

In RF you can have a Maxwell render by pushing F6 (or clicking the yellow FIRE button) to have an interactive view of the scene or you can go to "Playback/Maxwell Preview" and create a video out of your scene.

Although the engine is the same, the way RF deals with is completely different. My guess is that the problem is only in FIRE due to the interactive threading system.
