Not using GPU and only 1/4 CPU

Post by Bardipper » Sat Aug 03, 2013 9:13 pm

I'm running a system with 2 Xeon 8-core processors and a Quadro k4000 graphics board. When I run a sim, only 4 CPU cores are being used, and the GPU is not used at all. I have the RF2013 Learning Addition. I use Max 2013 and Windows 7 x64 is my operating system. Is there a way to increase the usage of my computer?
Thanks.

In also using 2 8 core xeons. What kind of sim are you doing? SPH particles won't always use 100% of your CPU but Hybrido will. As for GPU, I'm not sure but I think that's usually only helpful for scenes with millions of particles (like 10mil+)

Just a simple circle emitter and a vase.

Yeah so that's a standard SPH particle emitter, and won't take up too much CPU power unless its really complex. Try a command line simulation though and it should go way faster.

Hi,

The problem with the sph could be due to the drivers for your graphic card. There was a problem with the latest drivers for nvidia graphic cards.

Another issue is when RealFlow is simulating sph with few particles. In this case, RealFlow won't get all threads to simulate because it is more complicated to distribute the particles for all threads thant if they can be simulated in a single thread.

I backed up to the next-to-last driver and it's working better. But the TechPowerUp display shows no GPU usage.

SPH/ Standard Particles = No GPU support

Hybrido/ Grid/ Whatever you may call it = GPU support

That's how it works.

Florian is it also true that GPU is only helpful for scenes with many millions of particles??

Truly speaking, I haven't measured that with the stable release, yet. As I am about to doing some serious R&D and setups in the upcoming months, I can tell you more about that, soon.

From how I understand the Algorithm inside RF as it was explained by Angel Tena last Siggraph (there are viedos somewhere in this forum), you will get the most out of GPU support when there are serious amounts of particles in the scene. If I've got time tomorrow, I will create a Benchmark scene and upload it here, so we might post results and see what's going on.
