Custom wave splashes off a boat

Post by andrew.ross » Tue Apr 05, 2011 8:46 pm

Hi all,

I have an interesting situation i am battling with, I have been tasked with creating a scene with a boat and Ice bergs in a stormy ocean that will be comped with live greenscreen footage for an upcoming doco.

I have created the boat geo and placed it in a Maya generated stormy ocean with foam etc, the challenge is now to get the splashes, spray and foam bouncing off the hull of the hero characters boat that i can comp in nuke.

Whats the best way of going about this? the boat moves irratically from the action of the storm from maya and i am not sure which is the best method of getting purely the interaction out..do i use realwave, grid fluids? if so how would i get the splashes to interact? i cant exactly drop the boat the get splashes and i dont require ripples and wakes from realwave.

Seriously stumped and have a dealine of friday for the shot. :?

AAAh the life of a compositor ay!

Right i think i have come up with a solution in case anyone els runs up against a similar issue.
In my case it was as easy as bringing in the .sd file of my boat with the animation of the Maya ocean (make boat locator with inherant water anim). Then set up a few cylinders on either side of the boat that shoot particles at the side of the boat to get the splashes, add foam, splash and mist emitters and export the meshes etc.

Texture and render in Maya, comp in Nuke as and when reguired.
