Determining an objects optimal mass

Post by FlorianK » Thu Sep 22, 2011 4:14 pm

Hi,

I am doing a scene where an anchor is hanging on a chain and there are some relations I do not understand.
My chain has a mass of 0.23kg at each element and with 188 elements this is about 43kg.

The anchor hanging on the chain has a weight of approx. 50 kg.

The chain is attached to an MJ, hanging in space at a fixed postion.

With this setting, the MJ breaks afer some frames, even though I think the relation of the weights cannot be problematic...a 50kg anchor on a 40 kg chain shouldn't be a problem.

So I am lowering the anchor's density more and more until hopefully the top MJ won't break anymore but this gets me values that are ridiculous for an anchor (maybe a toy anchor made from plastic). Another problem is, the anchor is meant to be sunk in a Hybrido- based tank. My toy plastic anchor surely wont sink at all.

So how do I need to set thing up? What do I have to keep in mind when doing so?
