Very weird SPH sim times
Re: Very weird SPH sim times
Exactly the same as before but not exporting anything. I didn't bother doing command line tests cos that's fine.
Test 1
With GUI updates on the sim took 1:11 mins.
With GUI updates off (ALT-D) it took 3:35 mins.
Test 2
With GUI updates on the sim took 5:49 mins.
With GUI updates off (ALT-D) it took 7:33 mins.
Test 3
I restarted Rf:
With GUI updates on the sim took 1:12 mins.
With GUI updates off (ALT-D) it took 3:27 mins.
Test 4
I re-ran the test (without restarting Rf):
With GUI updates on the sim took 5:21 mins.
With GUI updates off (ALT-D) it took 7:31 mins.
--------------------------------------
I restarted Rf and reversed the sequence by simming with updates off first, then on.
Test 1
With GUI updates off (ALT-D) it took 1:19 mins.
With GUI updates on the sim took 3:21 mins.
Test 2
With GUI updates off (ALT-D) it took 5:43 mins.
With GUI updates on the sim took 7:49 mins.
Test 3
I restarted Rf:
With GUI updates off (ALT-D) it took 1:12 mins.
With GUI updates on the sim took 3:43 mins.
Test 4
I re-ran the test (without restarting Rf):
With GUI updates off (ALT-D) it took 5:03 mins.
With GUI updates on the sim took 7:57 mins.
---------------------
Conclusion:
I'm confused.....
Yes, the sim times are very strange but it also shows that even if updates off is run first or second, the second sim is always slower than the first.

Re: Very weird SPH sim times
I've run the scene exactly as it was saved by you. I've followed the exact same process as I've used in previous tests.atena wrote: I used the following scene that you can load either in RF2012 and RF2013.
2012
Test 1
With GUI updates on the sim took 53 secs.
With GUI updates off (ALT-D) it took 51 secs.
Test 2
With GUI updates on the sim took 52 secs.
With GUI updates off (ALT-D) it took 51 secs.
Test 3
I restarted Rf:
With GUI updates on the sim took 52 secs.
With GUI updates off (ALT-D) it took 51 secs.
Test 4
I re-ran the test (without restarting Rf):
With GUI updates on the sim took 52 secs.
With GUI updates off (ALT-D) it took 50 secs.
2013
Test 1
With GUI updates on the sim took 4:35 mins.
With GUI updates off (ALT-D) it took 15:18 mins.
With command line it took 49 secs.
There isn't much point doing the other tests. I think we know what the outcome will be.

Re: Very weird SPH sim times
Thank you very much for the tests and the information about your system. At least we know that the CMD is giving you the same times than in RF2012, this confirms what I said about SPH solver being the same in RF2013.
The time when display is off is mind-blowing, for sure is something we are doing that your graphics card doesn't like. I guess that you have the latest version of your graphics card drivers.
In any case we will try to reproduce and research further on this issue. Thank you.

No probs. Annoying but interesting too.
Yes, updated my drivers a few days ago. Win7 is up to date too.
I'll try a beta version of 2013?

I just tried it with beta .0088 and got the same thing. 2:30mins (updates on), 4:40mins (updates off). Then 7mins (updates on).
37secs with command line.

Here's something a bit interesting (maybe). For my laptop the DirectX report states in the display tab that my graphics card is Intel(R) HD Graphics Family. I would have thought it'd display my Nvidia card instead.
On this system (family pc), in the display tab it shows the Nvidia card in DirectX.
Do you find this strange? Maybe what my laptop may be doing is picking up the integrated graphics first.

Re: Very weird SPH sim times
Those tests are really helpful, We are trying to find a computer in the office where we can reproduce the problem. If you don't mind once we detect the problem maybe we can send you a patched version to confirm that the problem is solved.
Can't stop saying thanks for your help on this issue. It is really appreciated.

No problem. Looking forward to knowing what the cause was.

Re: Very weird SPH sim times
I've been talking to Angel about the problem but last night I found the cause. To cut a long story short, it was my gfx card driver for my Nvidia GeForce 540M
As a last resort I uninstalled driver version 320.18. I was going to install 314.07 but Windows automatically installed 306.97.
Yesterday, before I did this, these were the results:
TEST 1: openGL on, openGL off, command line = (1:17 mins, 3:15 mins, 36 secs)
TEST 2: openGL off, openGL on = (1:29 mins, 3:23 mins)
TEST 3: openGL on, openGL on = (1:34 mins, 3:39 mins)
Now:
TEST 1: openGL on, openGL off, command line = (30 secs, 30 secs, 32 secs)
TEST 2: openGL off, openGL on = (31 secs, 31 secs)
TEST 3: openGL on, openGL on, command line = (34 secs, 33 secs, 36 secs)
I've installed loads of windows updates and still getting those times.
One thing though (there's always something), the command line is exactly the same. I'd expect it to be less than using GUI.
Still need to do some tests though.

Re: Very weird SPH sim times
Thank you.
I guess that CMD mode has more impact when the work load is bigger and the time spent in painting the viewport is not very small.
Actually when Hybrido2 when running in CMD you are using 1 thread more than if you run on the GUI, this is because in GUI we reserve 1 thread for keeping the GUI responsive which is something cool when you have 30 million particles in the viewport.
Thank you.
