Slower than 2012

Post by Otuama » Wed Jul 17, 2013 4:31 pm

I'm using driver 314.22 for my geforce 540M so I can get faster SPH times due to that nasty bug with the newest drivers.

However, 2013 SPH sims are still 2x slower than 2012.

I've made a simple scene in both versions and 2012 takes 16secs, 33secs & 1min. 2013 takes 33secs, 1min 5secs & 2min 2secs.

Maybe not using an up to date driver isn't helping matters.

I'm also not sure whether hybrido is also 2x slower because I obviously can't compare it with 2012 and unless someone has the exact same system as me, nobody else can test it.

Are these results with command line simulations? I've notice an extreme boost in sim speed with command line in LE.

No, these tests weren't with the command line but with GUI. Command line sims have been consistently quick but I haven't done any sims with the 2012 CL.

I'll maybe do that tomorrow.

I don't know how command line effects the speed with 2012, but I can promise it makes 2013 sims much faster, especially with SPH particles. Please post results if you try it. Good luck!

Do you have both versions installed? If so, can you make the same simple scene in both versions and run a GUI test to see if you get the same speeds.

Depending on what your scene is, you may need to have a pretty high SPH res to see worthwhile results.

Unfortunately I do not. But I can tell you that no matter what the parameters are it is much faster with command line for me.

With 2013 LE I just did a 2 tests:

The tests are with a default circle emitter, a plane, and gravity.
in 24 frames at 24fps min/max steps are 1-416.
Reaches a max of 1829 particles.

Command Line simulation done in 5 Seconds. (00:00:05)
GUI simulation with viewport disabled 3 Minutes and 57 Seconds. (00:03:57)

Something is clearly not right with SPH particles simulated in the GUI (at least with LE). Luckily Command Line sims are very fast, but the slowness of the GUI sims must be the result of some kind of bug.

Do you have the Standard Edition? I'm curious if it's the same.

Yeah, I know all that about command line. My main interest is in knowing whether people get faster speeds with 2012 when not using CL. Having said that, I still haven't tested the difference between the CL with 2012 & 2013.

Interested to see the results of that.

Yeah, I have standard so can't load your scene.

Yeah sorry I have no idea what speeds were like in 2012.

But you can make my scene with this batch script.

Code: Select all

scene.add_PB_Emitter("Circle").setParameter("Position.y", 2.0)
scene.addDaemon("Gravity").setParameter("Position.y", 5.0)
scene.addPlane()

The results obviously differs with sys spec.

Using your same settings:

9 secs with CL.
10 secs GUI openGL off.

So strange, thanks a lot for testing it!
